Takashi Shimura is impressive in this slightly squalid tale of a dipsomaniac doctor ("Sanada") charged with caring for a population housed in a bombed out part of the city. A large stagnant pond amidst their community is as likely to prove a source of toxicity as the pervading Yakuza activities. Those centre around "Matsunaga" (Toshirô Mifune) who turns up at the surgery with an injured hand. The doctor treats the wound but also suggest that the man might want to get treated for what he suspects is a case of tuberculosis. The two men fight - verbally and physically - and things continue to worsen when his boss "Okada" (Reizaburô Yamamoto) gets out of prison and starts to reassert his authority amongst the shopkeepers. Despite the initial hostility, Kurosawa manages to generate a considerable degree of amity between the two men as the story progresses. It is a friendship - of sorts - borne out of frustration and a desire to drink a great deal, and that dynamic becomes more engaging as the inevitability of parts of the story become ever clearer. There is some lovely guitar accompaniment to Fumio Hayasaka's score and the dialogue sparingly but convincingly guides us along as these two opposites start to attract. It is tightly paced with plenty of action as well as engendering, for me anyway, quite a degree of sympathy for the physician caught in a maelstrom of despair that is as much self-induced as anything.
A doctor's sophisticated wife joins him at his remote Asian practice to try and patch up their marriage. Increasingly violent friction between local rubber plantation workers and the authorities force both parties to make decisions.
Forced on the road by yakuza obligations, a man sets out on a reckless journey to Tsumagoi. Movie posters for local cinemas were often displayed at sento (public baths) too. The handwritten text on the bottom here announces the film will play at Hassen for 3 days.
A gangster escapes jail and quickly makes plans to continue his criminal ways elsewhere, but a determined inspector is closing in.
A life-size, inflatable sex doll suddenly comes to life one day. Without her owner knowing, she goes for a walk around town and falls in love with Junichi. She starts to date Junichi and gets a job at the same store where he works. Everything seems to be going perfectly for her until something unexpected happens.
A country boy becomes the head of a gang through the purchase of some lucky roses from an old lady. He and a singer at the gang's nightclub try to do a good deed for the old lady when her daughter comes to visit.
Boris Buzančić plays an idealistic young doctor who is assigned a nearly deserted village. The backwards residents at first resent Buzančić's new-fangled methods. Gradually, he proves his worth and wins their confidence. The clincher comes when Buzančić rids the community of a despotic villain.
The story revolves around the life of Mi, a free-spirited young woman in the very conservative 1940's Burmese society, and her many lovers. She drinks. She smokes. She thinks you're a joke. She's also traumatized, insecure, and very tired in life. She's like a butterfly ... a butterfly pinned to a cardboard. Will she risk tearing her delicate wings to free herself?
A small-time thug who collects debts for the local triad is torn between his criminal aspirations and his devotion to family.
The 1965 Japanese yakuza film is the last episode of the Ankokugai series.
A renowned professor is forced to reassess her life when she is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer.
