**After “The Magnificent Seven”, we have "The Magnificent Sloth".** Despite the aura it gained, Kurosawa's “Seven Samurai” pales a lot when compared to the grandeur of the film “Magnificent Seven”. However, and following the success achieved, the studios decided to make more films and sequels. I'm going to see them all, but I can tell you right now that this one isn't even half as good as the first film. Let's start with the redeeming qualities, so we don't lose the will to write: Yul Brynner is an excellent actor, he is absolutely comfortable with the material given to him, and he has a profile for the film. Incidentally, he is the only actor from the first film who returned to play his character a second time – even imposing, as a condition, the dismissal of Steve McQueen, with whom he had had difficult disagreements behind the scenes of the original production. We still have good action scenes and shootings. The performances of Claude Akins, Robert Fuller and Warren Oates are also not far behind, with a great effort from the actors. Everything else, however, is disappointing, starting with the script: it's exactly the same as the one used in the first film, with the same story and the same structure. The village that the Seven are going to help is exactly the same one they saved before, so the sets and costumes seem to have been reused. The soundtrack is exactly the same as the first film... that is, this film copied the first one, but with less great and notable actors. Frankly unfortunate… if the studios were that lazy to invest and make a decent film, they might as well not have done anything.
At the beginning of the 1913 Mexican Revolution, greedy bandit Juan Miranda and idealist John H. Mallory, an Irish Republican Army explosives expert on the lam from the British, fall in with a band of revolutionaries plotting to strike a national bank. World War II is raging and the manpower shortage has hit the range since every able-bodied cowboy of military age is off fighting for Uncle Sam. Dad Mathews, a rancher with a huge government contract order for beef, has trouble with the cattle rustlers, led by Henry Judson and Lefty Lewis, who are taking advantage of the situation to steal his herds. John Paul Revere, Special State Investigator, arrives, and upon meeting Mathews' daughter, Betty, gets the idea of recruiting the hard-riding daughters of the district into the WAPS, an organization which will be to the cattle country what the WACS and WAVES are to the Army and Navy. He trains them in military procedure and provides them with radio sending-and-receiving sets. Johnny's sidekick, Frog Millhouse, finds himself the possessor of a "walkie-talkie" which he considers just a "doo-dad" at first, but which is instrumental in the end, in helping Johnny and the WAPS trap the gang of rustlers in their hideout.

Around the film hang fascinating questions about border politics, which I’ll touch on in an introduction before the screening. One of Eugene Buck’s motivations for making the film may have been his rough cross-examination during his kidnappers’ first trials, in October 1913, when defense attorneys cast him as a confused and unreliable witness against idealistic freedom fighters. On film he could reproduce the pursuit, the shootouts, his kidnapping, and his friend’s murder just as he had testified. Reenacting the crime on film may have been the best revenge—and a way to honor the sacrifice of Deputy Ortiz, a twenty-year police veteran and, for the era, a rare Mexican American lawman.
Having fled to Mexico from the U.S. many years ago for killing his father's murderer, Martin Brady travels to Texas to broker an arms deal for his Mexican boss, strongman Governor Cipriano Castro. Brady breaks a leg and while recuperating in Texas the gun shipment is stolen. Complicating matters further the wife of local army major Colton has designs on him, and the local Texas Ranger captain makes him a generous offer to come back to the states and join his outfit. After killing a man in self-defense, Brady slips back over the border and confronts Castro who is not only unhappy that Brady has lost his gun shipment but is about to join forces with Colton to battle the local raiding Apache Indians.
