La terra trema

A family of four are the sole inhabitants of a small island, where they struggle each day to irrigate their crops.

Ten strangers are summoned to a remote island and while they are waiting for the mysterious host to appear, a recording levels serious accusations at each of the guests. Soon they start being murdered, one by one. As the survivors try to keep their wits, they reach a disturbing conclusion: one of them must be the killer.

In 1841, young Ishmael signs up for service aboard the Pequod, a whaler sailing out of New Bedford. When elderly pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari returns to his boarding house from a protest calling for a hike in old-age pensions, his landlady demands her 15,000-lire rent by the end of the month or he and his small dog will be turned out onto the street. Unable to get the money in time, Umberto fakes illness to get sent to a hospital, giving his beloved dog to the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid for temporary safekeeping.

Gino, a drifter, begins an affair with inn-owner Giovanna as they plan to get rid of her older husband.
