Boys' college in eastern Quebec at the end of the 1940s. Brother Jean is not a teacher like the others. A viking jarl and his two sons go through a crisis of faith

Norway in the 10th century. Askur, son of the powerful Thorgeir marries Embla, daughter of one of the few remaining landowners in Norway, in a pagan ceremony.
