The mines, now known as the Chislehurst Caves, are a popular tourist attraction for many reasons including its use as an air-raid shelter for 15,000 people during the war and its more recent status as a popular music concert venue. Many ships have been attacked and burnt here, their cargo stolen and their men slaughtered. These "men of the night" would carry lanterns to lure boats to the rocky shore where they would then be attacked. Among the cargo were exotic animal such as dancing bears which would then be lose in the forest.
