This was made in the same year that star Buster Crabbe was off fighting Charles Middleton's menacing "Emperor Ming" and he should maybe just have stuck to that? After a bit of quite exciting rodeo action, we meet "Travis" (Tom Keene) who is chatting with the check-clad "Traft" (Benny Baker) who isn't prepared to risk his hat to run his uncle's cattle ranch, so maybe he could manage it for him? What "Traft" doesn't know is that his new friend is really a Texas Ranger and this plan could work well as he is chasing an outlaw believed to be rustling the cows. Crabbe's "Slinger" owns the adjacent property and is soon embroiled in a plot designed to make people suspicious that it's actually him that's doing the thieving, so he's going to have to act. That's really the bit that lets the whole thing down. None of them are really very good at that, and it misses the cheeky, curmudgeonly, character usually employed to inject a little comedy into it too. Crabbe is just way too earnest and although Effie Ellsler has some fun as the granny wielding a gun easily as long as she is tall, it's all a rather procedural drama with little to remember about it. I think it's called "drift" for a reason.
New Yorkers Paul and Meryl Morgan seem to have it all - except that their marriage is crumbling around them. But their romantic woes are small compared to the trouble they find themselves in after witnessing a murder. To protect them from an assassin, federal agents whisk away Paul and Meryl to a small town in Wyoming, where their marriage will crash and burn, or their passion will reignite.
Hud Bannon is a ruthless young man who tarnishes everything and everyone he touches. Hud represents the perfect embodiment of alienated youth, out for kicks with no regard for the consequences. There is bitter conflict between the callous Hud and his stern and highly principled father, Homer. Hud's nephew Lon admires Hud's cheating ways, though he soon becomes too aware of Hud's reckless amorality to bear him anymore. In the world of the takers and the taken, Hud is a winner. He's a cheat, but, he explains, "I always say the law was meant to be interpreted in a lenient manner."
Ben (Glenn Ford) and Marion (Henry Fonda) are two cowboys who make a meager living breaking wild horses. Their frequent employer Jim (Chill Wills), who always gets the better of them, talks them into taking a nondescript horse in lieu of some of their wages. Ben finds that the horse is un-rideable, he comes up with the idea of taking it to a rodeo and betting other cowhands they cannot ride it.
A man and a woman running from their pasts are trapped on a collision course with the future. Frank T. Wells, a newly-released ex-con looking for a few acres of freedom on the rodeo circuit. Scarlett Stuart, a wild beautiful woman on the run from a bank robbery gone desperately wrong. Together they will explore their own personal vision of the American Dream.
CREMASTER 2 is rendered as a gothic Western that introduces conflict into the system. On the biological level it corresponds to the phase of fetal development during which sexual division begins. In Matthew Barney's abstraction of this process, the system resists partition and tries to remain in the state of equilibrium imagined in Cremaster 1.
Cowboys Beauregard Decker and Virgil Blessing attend a rodeo in Phoenix, where Decker falls in love with beautiful cafe singer Cherie. He wants to take Cherie back to his native Montana and marry her, but she dreams of traveling to Hollywood and becoming famous. When she resists his advances, Decker forces Cherie onto the bus back to Montana with him, but, when the bus makes an unscheduled stop due to bad weather, the tables are turned.
