Twenty years old prostitute and drug addict, Jola, by chance meets Andrzej, a "railway station gay". They try to stay together, in spite of numerous diffculties. They both are carriers of the HIV virus. At the end of their travels they find themselves in the Red Palace - formerly the recreation centre for Party dignitaries, now a home for AIDS sufferers - which is run by father Jan. In the nearby small town aggression begins to grow again the unwanted guests; the house have been promised to the local people for housing purposes... The lives and fates of Jola, Andrzej, and father Jan become increasingly intertwined with one another...

Olga Neuwirth, for a long time one of the great composers of the present, succeeds with this opera in creating a captivating arc across many musical genres. It’s an exciting, socially critical production by Polly Graham who puts a fantastically singing and playing Kate Lindsey in the center of the action.

A young woman is fired by her lover from her job in a bookstore and meets a trafficker she falls in love with. She becomes a heroin and prostitutes to buy the drug. The trafficker is arrested and she surrenders to the supplier in exchange for drugs. He pretends to care for a cemetery and demands money from him. She desperately kills him. When the trafficker leaves, he decides to rebuild his life and goes as a doctor to the mountains with the young woman. About Vipeholmsanstalten in Lund, Sweden, and the experiments that during the 40s and 50s were carried out on mentally and physically handicapped patients, to investigate the effect of sugar on the teeth, this at a time when tooth decay was a major problem in dental health in Sweden. By force-feeding the patients at Vipeholm a kind of extra-sweet caramel in large quantities, the experiments revolutionized research, while the defenseless patients had to take the hit for it.

A few minutes in the life of two people: a young woman who has her whole life in front of her and an old man ill with asthma who has only one more night to live.
