Inspired by John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, the Lightly family struggles with a rebellious son, a selfish adopted daughter, an overworked mother and an out of work father. When they leave for a mountain park to decompress and try to rebuild their once joyful family, tragedy strikes and the Lightlys begin a fight for survival that challenges everything they know about themselves and their beliefs.

Renowned oceanographer Steve Zissou has sworn vengeance upon the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. In addition to his regular team, he is joined on his boat by Ned, a man who believes Zissou to be his father, and Jane, a journalist pregnant by a married man. Settled into a job at a grocery store and an ongoing affair with local woman Betty Carver, Gilbert finally has his life shaken up by the free-spirited Becky.

On the way to meet with an independent artist in the South, newlywed art dealer Madeleine is convinced by her husband, George, that they should stop to meet his family in North Carolina. Madeleine's affluent lifestyle clashes with the family, but she befriends George's wide-eyed and pregnant sister-in-law, Ashley, who is nearing her due date. Through the family, Madeleine gains greater insight into George's character.

Quirky and rebellious April Burns lives with her boyfriend in a low-rent New York City apartment miles away from her emotionally distant family. While her father struggles to drive her family into the city, April - an inexperienced cook - runs into kitchen trouble and must ask a neighbor for help.
