A young schoolteacher and her two female friends rent a vacation house on an island. While exploring the island, the teacher runs into a handsome young man who tells her is actually a "merman" from the sea, and tries to convince her to go back to the sea with him.

Teenage swimmer Olivia's main goal is to enter and win the Brazilian National Swimming Championship: an already-difficult task, made harder by her struggle with anorexia and the daily pressures of family and friends. However, her friend Ana seems to approve of her idea of persisting in illness.

The young and friendly Kalle returns after spending many years in jail for his escape attempts. He doesn't know exactly who blew the whistle, but his friend Skrodt is definitely under suspicion. Kalle returns to ostensibly renew the friendship and to see Isabelle whom he loves. The duplicitous friendship between the two men becomes the main focus of the story which features interesting plot twists at the end.

The tailor also has a wife, who works for the Panamanian president and a huge debt. The mission is to learn what the President intends to do with the Canal.
