Two boys in their early teens in a strictly-run pre-WWII Catholic School form a firm friendship which is troubled by an abbot who is obsessed with the younger of the students.

Things appear to be looking up for a cash-strapped, regional hospital when it hires a reputedly brilliant cardiac surgeon to head up its pediatric cardiac surgery unit. But when increasing numbers of children begin dying on the operating table, the unit's top O.R. nurse begins to suspect that the new surgeon is not as experienced as everyone has been lead to believe. Gabriel "Flash" Elorde was born to a poor farmer's family in the town of Bogo, Cebu on March 25, 1935, the youngest of the 16 children. With his skills and humility both inside and outside the ring, "Flash" Elorde will always remain a tribute to the sport. He was a quintessential Filipino who "feared no man but was humble before all men."

Public bathhouses also act as a kind of social security system, as welfare families are given tickets for bathing in the public baths, allowing them to soak in a large bathtub at a low price. Public baths attract a truly diverse range of people.
