Dr Janina Ramirez travels across glaciers and through the lava fields of Iceland to find out about one of the most compelling of the great Viking stories - the Laxdaela Saga. This hour-long film explores how the unique literary achievements of the Saga writers were possible at a time of such immense cultural, political and religious upheaval.

A viking jarl and his two sons go through a crisis of faith

In 8th century Scandinavia, the Danish kingdoms are under threat from Charlemagne, King of the Franks. In a desperate attempt to strengthen their position, Sigfred, King of the Danes, marries his eldest son off to the daughter of a wealthy Norwegian family. However, when his other son falls in love with the same woman their relationship is put to the ultimate test. Because she is being blamed by her father, the young Viking Freydis feels responsible for her mother’s death and develops a profound psychosis. She then embarks on a journey to Hel, the goddess of the dead, in order to revive her mother, and thus finally manages to free herself from her father’s blame.

The Vikings were the most ferocious warriors of the Middle Ages. Especially fearsome were the select few who wielded a formidable weapon: a light, razor sharp, virtually indestructible sword with its maker's name, Ulfberht, inlaid along the blade.

A 4 year-old boy stands in awe of a 1,000 year-old Viking boat in a small Norwegian museum and finds within its silent grace an impressionistic sweep of picture and music revealing the rich spirit of Norway and its people. (This is the movie that was shown after the Maelstrom Ride in Epcot Center)
