Neil Simon isn't really at his best with this rather hit or miss telling of four families who happen to stay at the world famous Beverly Hills Hotel. The divorced "Warren" family - Jane Fonda & Alan Alda are squabbling over the future of their teenage daughter. She has custody but the youngster wants to spend more time with her father and that's causing no end of self doubt and frustration with her mother. "Marvin" (Walter Matthau) comes on a day ahead of his wife "Millie" (Elaine May) and manages to find himself with an hooker who has no idea when it's a good time to wake up and leave. Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby are brothers travelling with their wives who find an hotel mishap leaves one couple in luxury, the other in a glorified bedsit. Finally, the best of the script falls to Maggie Smith and Michael Caine as the married couple in town because she's been nominated for an Oscar. Last minutes nerves, wobbles, loads of gin and a constant search for validation from her loving but not the most gushing of husbands provides us with much of the best sarcasm and wit contained here, and those scenes - sparing after the half way mark give us most of what's worth watching here. The Pryor/Cosby and Matthau/May scenarios are more contrived and don't work nearly so well and the initial melodrama really only offers Fonda a chance to deliver some lengthy monologues of, occasionally pithy, dialogue. It does poke fun at some of the more facile elements of life and fame, but the episodic nature of the storytelling I found to be a little disjointed and not really that funny.
A home, a motorcar, servants, the latest fashions: the most eligible and most finicky bachelor in Paris offers them all to Gigi. But she, who's gone from girlish gawkishness to cultured glamour before our eyes, yearns for that wonderful something money can't buy.
Can a girl from Little Rock find happiness with a mature French planter she got to know one enchanted evening away from the military hospital where she is a nurse? Or should she just wash that man out of her hair? Bloody Mary is the philosopher of the island and it's hard to believe she could be the mother of Liat who has captured the heart of Lt. Joseph Cable USMC. While waiting for action in the war in the South Pacific, sailors and nurses put on a musical comedy show. The war gets closer and the saga of Nellie Forbush and Emile de Becque becomes serious drama.
A dramatized account of a Victorian cause célèbre, written by John Osborne and concerning the true story of the last person in England to be tried for blasphemy. Richard Burton plays John George Holyoake, a social reformer who goes on trial for speaking in public about his atheist views. Rachel Roberts plays his wife, and the programme is introduced by Face to Face inquisitor John Freeman.
Wealthy rancher Bick Benedict and dirt-poor cowboy Jett Rink both woo Leslie Lynnton, a beautiful young woman from Maryland who is new to Texas. She marries Benedict, but she is shocked by the racial bigotry of the White Texans against the local people of Mexican descent. Rink discovers oil on a small plot of land, and while he uses his vast, new wealth to buy all the land surrounding the Benedict ranch, the Benedict's disagreement over prejudice fuels conflict that runs across generations.
In the future, the government maintains control of public opinion by outlawing literature and maintaining a group of enforcers, known as “firemen,” to perform the necessary book burnings. Fireman Montag begins to question the morality of his vocation…
In the slums of the upper West Side of Manhattan, tensions are high as a gang of Polish-Americans compete against a gang of recently immigrated Puerto Ricans, but this doesn't stop two romantics from each gang falling in love.
In Martha's Vineyard, Mass., conjoined twins Walt and Bob Tenor make the best of their handicap by being the fastest grill cooks in town. While outgoing Walt hopes to one day become a famous actor, shy Bob prefers to stay out of the spotlight. When a fading Hollywood actress, Cher, decides to get her show "Honey and the Beaze" cancelled, she hires Walt - and his brotherly appendage - as her costars. But their addition surprisingly achieves the opposite.
The incredibly spoiled and overprivileged students of Camden College are a backdrop for an unusual love triangle between a drug dealer, a virgin and a bisexual classmate.
Yuri Orlov is a globetrotting arms dealer and, through some of the deadliest war zones, he struggles to stay one step ahead of a relentless Interpol agent, his business rivals and even some of his customers who include many of the world's most notorious dictators. Finally, he must also face his own conscience.
