"Rafi" (Uma Thurman) is on the rebound from a messy divorce when she meets the charismatic young artist "David" (Bryan Greenberg). In theory they have nothing in common - and she is fourteen years older than him. That's not going to stop them though, and she begins to regale her shrink (Meryl Streep) with tales of her new found affection. Sure, it's about sex - but she likes him - she's not that shallow. Their relationship is soon burgeoning; they are meeting friends and becoming a couple. Then the bombshell - his mother is her shrink! With the secrets out and his mother now aware rather embarrassingly of some details about his penis, the whole scenario must recalibrate. Can the couple make a go of things or is it all just an hormonal fling that will peter out? It's not terrible this film, helped not least by a Streep who plays the Jewish mother-cum-psychiatrist quite amusingly in the few scenes she graces. There's also a decent enough - if maybe a little too sincere - rapport between Thurman and her eye candy and it does occasionally make you wonder what age (or religion) ought to have to do with people falling in love (or even lust for that matter). The conclusion is pretty weak, I thought, and sort of falls between two stools despite the best efforts of the concierge "Damien" (Ato Essandoh). The production is a bit soapy at times, indeed plenty of it looked like a studio-based sitcom but with this cast and a bit of goodwill, you'll probably not hate it - I didn't.
The Bergers, a blue-collar Jewish family living in an overstuffed tenement and undone by the Depression, struggle through hard times and dream of a better future in this 1972 production of Clifford Odets' pungent play. Personalities and politics clash as Odets' mélange of characters try to survive on pennies a day. Walter Matthau plays cynical World War I amputee Moe Axelrod, and Leo Fuchs portrays the family's iron-willed leftist grandfather.
Death in Love is a psychosexual-thriller about a love affair between a Jewish woman and a doctor overseeing human experimentation at a Nazi German concentration camp, and the impact this has on her sons' lives in the 1990s.
A student will do anything to become part of the "in-crowd" at the exclusive school she attends in New York.
Told from the man's perspective, the story of a couple trying to reclaim the life and love they once knew and pick up the pieces of a past that may be too far gone.
Entropy is a semi-autobiographical film which tells the story of a young director struggling to make a film for a despotic studio while his life falls apart around him. Along the way, he goes on tour with U2 to help them make a music video, gets married in Vegas, and has a conversation with his cat.
Melissa Gilbert stars in this film adaptation of Danielle Steel's bestselling novel, in which a young girl named Pip and her mother meet an artist on the beach in Safe Harbour, where they have retreated in order to recover from the devastating loss of Pip's father and brother.
An East Indian native immigrates to New York City and stumbles his way onto the corporate fast-track.
A night club owner becomes infatuated with a torch singer and frames his best friend/manager for embezzlement when the chanteuse falls in love with him.
A deranged killer wearing a clown mask begins preying on a group of young women working at a phone-sex company.
The film’s storyline is one many returned Maltese migrants will no doubt associate with: it’s about a young free-spirited artist, Karl, who returns to his home island Malta after a long time away. It covers his personal journey discovering his roots. Reliving old habits with friends and memories from his childhood, this journey leads him to re-visit his past with his ex-girlfriend, and then with a new friend, Anna, through whom he visits his old home in Gozo, now a neglected house full of memories. Anna is his springboard for self reflection and becomes his reason for trying to start life again in Malta; a place he’s familiar with but is now seeing through different eyes.
