Leo Genn is "Robert Sterling", a wealthy gent telling his friends in a café about a lady he knew once, in Monte Carlo. He was quite sweet on her - "Linda" (Merle Oberon), but she only had eyes for a dashing young man (Richard Todd) she helped out of a small cash-flow problem in the casino. Afterwards, they spent some time together, where they visited a small church and had luncheon with the local priest "Fr. Andre" (Stephen Murray) and his elderly mother, before she abandoned him once they had returned to Monaco. She couldn't make a clean break of it, though, and that night in the casino found him there, again, unable to control his addiction. There follows quite a scene as she tries to encourage him to stop, then we revert to the cafe scenario whereby the conclusion is explained. Mine wasn't the best edit of this film ever made, it seemed as if there were bits missing which really didn't help. Their rapid fire, intense, romance followed by her desertion is interesting, up to point, but there are too many holes. Why did she behave the way she did? We never really feel we get to know the characters at all. The ending is poor and the performances from all - I'm normally an huge fan of Genn - are really lacklustre. Some nice photography of the Côte D'Azur and Monegasque architecture help it out a little, but I'm afraid this is a all just a bit shallow.
Story of a young woman who marries a fascinating widower only to find out that she must live in the shadow of his former wife, Rebecca, who died mysteriously several years earlier. The young wife must come to grips with the terrible secret of her handsome, cold husband, Max De Winter. She must also deal with the jealous, obsessed Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper, who will not accept her as the mistress of the house.
An aging gambler on a losing streak attempts to rob a casino in Monte Carlo. But someone's already tipped off the cops before he even makes a move.
A con artist masquerades as Russian nobility and attempts to seduce the wife of an American diplomat.
Two neighboring kings addicted to gambling, Ranjit and his cousin Sohat, vie for the same beautiful young woman, Sunita, daughter of the hermit Kanwa.
Bedelia Carrington is living happily, it appears, in Monte Carlo with her husband Charlie Carrington. But a cultivated young artist, Ben Chaney, begins probing into her past with curious concern. Chaney, who is really a detective, learns that Bedelia's obsession for money has led her, in the past, to husband-poisoning for the insurance money.
After a wild night, wealthy Michael Reston's adulterous wife Charleen comes home with her ripe young body barely concealed by a dress in rags; murder results. Top New York defense lawyer J.G. Blane, whose own marriage exists in name only, arrives in Desert View, Nevada to find the townsfolk and politically powerful Sheriff Hoak distinctly hostile to the Restons. In due course, Blane discovers he's been "taken for a ride," and that quiet desert communities can be deadly.
A compulsive gambler bets her freedom against a $16,000 debt to a crime boss…and loses. But before he can collect, she skips town, with a private detective hot on her trail.
On the eve of WW-I the French Navy ship Lafayette returns to its Toulon base for one night. There is no shore leave, although wives are permitted to come to a party. The strain of command on the older captain and his new, young wife is very great.
The dashing but arrogant Prince Michael Fedor Lubimoff has to flee Tsarist Russia after falling into disgrace and settles in Monte Carlo, where he resumes his life of debauchery while World War I ravages the fields of Europe… (Partially lost film; reels 3 and 9 of a total of 11 are missing.)
