In the early days of Nazi Germany, a powerful noble family must adjust to life under the new dictatorship regime.

A woman, Tome, is born to a lower class family in Japan in 1918. The title refers to an insect, repeating its mistakes, as in an infinite circle. Imamura, with this metaphor, introduces the life of Tome, who keeps trying to change her poor life.

Reinaldo Cutipa lives with Matilde, his overprotective mother. When Reinaldo wants to go live with his girlfriend, Rosaura, Matilde is against it, triggering a chain of events that ultimately leads to a tragic crisis.

This loosely plotted coming-of-age tale follows the life of 15-year-old Laurent Chevalier as he stumbles his way over the burgeoning swell of adolescence in 1950s France.
