Barcelona, Spain, at the end of the 19th century. Joaquín Rius, a prominent businessman, marries the young Mariona Rebull. Their apparent happiness is overshadowed by the arrival of Ernesto Villar, Joaquín's friend and Mariona's former lover.

David Locke is a world-weary American journalist who has been sent to cover a conflict in northern Africa, but he makes little progress with the story. However, he soon finds out that the man was an arms dealer, leading Locke into dangerous situations. Aided by a beautiful woman, Locke attempts to avoid both the police and criminals out to get him.

Martin and Antoine, two French criminals, team up with Román and El Picas, a friend of the latter, to commit robberies in Barcelona, but things do not turn out as expected.

A young man named Pau Arrese, maintaining a relationship, somewhat deteriorated, with a girl (Gloria), seen as the reins of his life escape him, when, after a series of unfortunate incidents, ends up in jail. Inside prison, he become sortta friend a with David Velasco, a guy who lives on odd jobs done for a certain mobster. After being released, Pau will be involved in some rackets, with David and other gangsters, that will lead him to the lowest point of his existence.

During the summer of 1957 a man called Juan de Dios goes through a convalescence in a country hotel. Following the prescriptions of the doctor, he must take complete rest, "not a single movement, not a single thught". Stretched on a hammock, Juan de Dios must resign to "sinking himself in the boredom, just like a castaway at sea". But suddenly he realizes that immobility is something impossible: Juan de Dios sees himself overwhelmed by a myriad of physical, sound, optical and olfactory sensations,which awaken his spirit. After three hours of this contemplation, he announces his departure in the next day. Back in Barcelona, Juan de Dios gives himself over to the sensationsof the city.
