Though some of the wheezes employed by the drivers do raise a smile or two, this really doesn't catch fire as Burt Reynolds' brand of mischievous charm struggles to hold it together. He and his pal "Victor" (Dom DeLuise) are determined to win the eponymous, infamous and illegal transcontinental dash - and hit on the idea of commandeering an ambulance so they can blue-light their way across their country. A synch, surely? They are not the only contestants, though, and Roger Moore is also intent on a bit of debonaire skulduggery with his very own Aston Martin - yep, that very one; whilst a couple of priests in a red Ferrari (Sammy Davis Jr. & Dean Martin) do their utmost to "bless" their way to the winning post. It's a star-studded affair with Peter Fonda; an entertaining, if fleetingly used, Jackie Chan and Farah Fawcett all in there too to complement some scene stealing scenes from permanently out of it doctor "Van Helsing" - Jack Elam, but the story soon starts to tire as it becomes a sort of live-action version of "Whacky Races" tinged with a few "Carry On" double-entendres. The "Rat Pack" contingent look like they are just along for the fee and Fawcett adds little but her usual degree of fluffiness as the damsel not really in distress. It's not a patch on "Smokey and the Bandit" (1977) though there are some fairly obvious cop-baiting similarities and by the end it has largely fizzled out. It has it's moments, just nowhere near enough of them until the bloopers reel under the credits.
When a wealthy sheikh puts up $1 million in prize money for a cross-country car race, there is one person crazy enough to hit the road hard with wheels spinning fast. Legendary driver J.J. McClure enters the competition along with his friend Victor and together they set off across the American landscape in a madcap action-adventure destined to test their wits and automobile skills.
Professional daredevil and white-suited hero, The Great Leslie, convinces turn-of-the-century auto makers that a race from New York to Paris (westward across America, the Bering Straight and Russia) will help to promote automobile sales. Leslie's arch-rival, the mustached and black-attired Professor Fate vows to beat Leslie to the finish line in a car of Fate's own invention.
A poor cobbler's son enters a $25,000 cross-country hiking contest sponsored by the footwear company that has nearly bankrupted his father. He also has fallen in love with the girl on the company's billboards, the competition's daughter, and her sweet inspiration keeps him tramping along.
A stunt car racing team gets involved in a madcap cross-country auto race that is supposed to determine the disposition of a family fortune.
Avery DuPoys is a wealthy businessman, organising a race. He meets one of the competitors of the race, who is in love with DuPoys's daughter. Another competitor crashes into the action, who is also in love with DuPoys's daughter. DuPoys suggests that whoever wins the race will have the opportunity to visit his daughter every Wednesday night. An action-packed race commences, with one competitor doing more than usual to win the race.
There is no love lost between the Red Dog Garage and the Black Cat Garage, two auto repair shops on opposite sides of the street. A big cross-country auto race is announced, and it turns into a no-holds-barred contest as the rival garages go all out to win.
