Gérard Ducarouge

Gérard Ducarouge was a distinguished French engineer and Formula 1 car designer celebrated for his contributions to motorsport engineering. After earning a degree in aeronautical engineering from the École Nationale Technique d’Aéronautique, he began his career at Nord Aviation, working on missile projects. In 1965, he transitioned to motorsport by joining Matra's racing division, where he played a pivotal role in designing the Matra MS80. This car secured the 1969 Formula 1 World Championship for Jackie Stewart. Ducarouge's tenure at Matra also included overseeing the development of the Matra MS670, which achieved three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1972 to 1974. Following Matra's withdrawal from racing, he joined Ligier in 1975, where his designs led to multiple Grand Prix victories between 1976 and 1981. After a brief period with Alfa Romeo, Ducarouge joined Team Lotus in 1983, significantly contributing to the team's resurgence by designing competitive cars that achieved several wins, notably with drivers Elio de Angelis and Ayrton Senna. Ducarouge's innovative approach and leadership were instrumental in the success of the teams he worked with, leaving a lasting impact on Formula 1 engineering.
