Profile

Angelika Rainer

Angelika Rainer is three times World Champion and two times Vice-Champion in Iceclimbing. Already as a child Angelika liked hiking with her mother in the mountains of South Tyrol and climbing trees in her garden. After she got in touch with a rock for the first time in her life at the age of 10, doing her very first fixed-rope route, she couldn't think about anything but climbing. The climbing hall, that was opened two years later in her hometown Merano, gave Angelika the possibility to indulge her passion with every fibre of her body. In 2008 Angelika's childhood dream came true: she won for the first time an Iceclimbing World Cup competition in Saas Fe, Switzerland. In 2012 and in 2015 she won the Overall World Cup ranking. In addition, she also won two times at the prestigious International Mixed climbing competition in Ouray, Colorado and at the single event Red Bull White Cliffs. But in the Winter Angelika does not only participate in competitions, but has also repeted some of the most difficult ice-, mixed- and Drytooling routes in the world. In November 2017 she climbs the Drytooling route 'A line above the sky' and becomes the first women to climb a route graded D15. On the rock Angelika climbs routes up to the grade 9a and with the first female ascent of the route 'Italia 61', 8a, 250m on Piz Ciavaces in the Dolomites, in 2008 she got a nice result also in this ambit of climbing. Not only in sports Angelika loves to be in touch with nature. In 2008 she earned a B.A. degree in Agricultural Economics at the University of Bolzano.Subsequently she works for several years at the agricultural research centre Laimburg, before she took the decision to totally dedicate herself to climbing. Fine Lines

For nearly three years, director Dina Khreino interviewed world-class mountain climbing athletes, listening to what compels them to leave behind families, friends, and everyday comforts to risk everything for a fleeting glimpse into the unknown. What she found was a tribe, a diverse group of professional adventurers and amateur philosophers forged by the ultimate test of body, mind, and spirit. In the face of shifting winds, sheer granite cliffs, and impossible odds, they climb. Each for their own reason, but every one connected by the vertical world. In this rarefied air, these athletes are fundamentally changed, not just as climbers, but as human beings.
