Henry Buckton

As well as writing songs, many in the scrumpy and western genre, Henry Buckton is a best selling social historian, although he has also written plays, film, and stories for children. He studied at the Somerset College of Arts, and his literary career began in 1985 with the broadcast of his first story on BBC Radio Bristol. Since then he has written several more children’s stories for radio broadcast. Between 2000 and 2003, he compiled, edited and published four books of celebrity childhood memories under contract to the BBC Children In Need Appeal, in order to raise money and awareness for disadvantaged children. These books included hundreds of original stories written especially for the project by well-known people, such as Emma Bunton, Jeremy Irons, Judi Dench, Nigel Havers, and Annie Lennox. Henry’s social histories include ‘Yesterday’s Country Village,’ which examines every aspect of rural life as it used to be. This book reached the No 1 spot in the WH Smith bestsellers list in their British and Irish History section. And ‘The Lost Villages,’ which visits a number of communities around Britain that were abandoned during the 20th century for various reasons. Henry’s general history books include ‘Voices from the Battle of Britain’ published in 2010 to mark the 70th anniversary of that famous conflict, and 'Retreat' published in 2017 to coincide with the epic movie about the Dunkirk evacuation that year starring Tom Hardy and Harry Styles. He has also written and presented a number of documentary films for the 1st-take film studio in Bristol which are all available on DVD. He has also helped to write a number of television films. He also makes regular TV appearances including Inside Out West, ITV West Country Tonight, ITV Thames Valley Tonight, Sky News and BBC Points West. Voices of the Battle of Britain

Based on the book of the same title by best-selling author Henry Buckton, this film is enhanced by a fascinating series of interviews with a wide variety of people who played a vital role in Britain’s ‘finest hour’. Included are the captivating accounts of six fighter pilots who risked their lives day after day to combat the Luftwaffe, which was at that time greatly more experienced in aerial warfare. Their memories are enhanced by the recollections of a gunner, two members of the 400,000-strong ground crew who kept as many aircraft flying as possible, a barrage balloon operator and men who helped to build Spitfires.
