Hédi Fried

Hédi Fried, born Szmuk, is a Hungarian/Swedish Holocaust survivor. On May 14, 1944, Hédi and her family, along with other Hungarian Jews, were deported in freight wagons from Sighet. After three days Hédi ended up in Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she and her younger sister Livia was separated from their parents. The parents were murdered on the night between May 17 and 18, 1944, in one of the gas chambers in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Born : 15th-Jun-1924

The horrors of the Holocaust and the loss of both mother and father has given Hédi Fried (1924-2022) a worry that cannot be calmed. She harbors hope for the future and a strong and stubborn belief that something like this will never happen again. Hédi Fried was a Swedish-Romanian author and psychologist. A Holocaust survivor, she passed through Auschwitz as well as Bergen-Belsen, coming to Sweden in July 1945 with the boat M/S Rönnskär.

The film starts just when WWII is over. A German ship, m / s Homberg, arrived at Malmö Nyhamn on May 11, 1945. On board there were over 1300 former concentration camp prisoners to be taken care of. We then follow one of the Red Cross Sergeant who was in Germany and received prisoners from concentration camps for further transport by boat to Sweden. 10000 prisoners would be decontaminated and made ready for departure. This happened in Lübeck. He was later moved to Poland to transport medical equipment to Otwock outside Warsaw where Sweden would build a hospital. Through his amateur photos we get an insight into the difficult circumstances that prevailed.
