Alain Pol

Alain Pol, born September 17, 1916 in Besançon in France, was a director and director of photography and cinematographer for the Lumière company. He was married to Janine Renaud, with whom he had 3 children then remarried to Odette Gourmel. He is known for the production of his daring and innovative documentary films including "À L'Assaut de la Tour Eiffel", halfway between documentary and fiction, the filmmaker films two teams of mountaineers who illegally climb the Eiffel Tower to the top before going back down. The action is punctuated by the intervention of gendarmes who try to stop their progress. This film won an award at the Venice Biennale and won the Louis Lumière Prize in 1948. He also directed numerous other documentaries including "Le Socle" (1948), "Jouons Le Jeu" (1952), as cinematographer on "Around The World With Orson Welles: The Dominici Affair" and many others... The Dominici Affair by Orson Welles

In 1956, Orson Welles directed 'The Tragedy of Lurs', an episode of the television series 'Around the World' that was inspired by the murder of a British family near the Dominici farm. The film was unfinished, but the French director Christophe Cognet recovered his materials and reconstructed the documentary.

Around the World with Orson Welles

Self - "Around The World With Orson Welles" (broadcast in France under the title: Le Carnet De Voyage d'Orson Welles) is a series of 6 episodes lasting 26 minutes produced by Louis Dolivet for a new British channel, ITV and dedicated to Orson Welles and following "Orson Welles' Sketch Book". The contract signed in March 1955 with ITV called for an order of 26 episodes, each to be a travelogue. This is Welles' first real work for television (the "Sketch Book" series consists of long fixed shots in the studio). The episode filmed first is the one dedicated to Vienna. Two episodes are devoted to the Basque Country, another to bullfighting, then to a district of Paris, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and finally, the last to retirees from Chelsea (London). The episode dedicated to the Domenici Affair was left partly unfinished, but should have been the first documentary dedicated to this affair which hit the headlines in France in 1952.
